TWENTY-FIVE

Harry walked into the incident room with Lillian.

‘Is Alex okay?’ Charlie Skellett asked.

‘Her nose is banged up a bit, Charlie, but she’ll be fine. I insisted she take today off, but she said she’ll be in tomorrow without fail.’

‘And the bastard did a runner,’ Stewart said. ‘I hope Max Hold is on the ball.’

‘When we were talking to Alex, she remembered something about the guy. He got out the van and came over to see her and she saw a name on his overalls: Amos. That was on one side. On the other was Bert’s. I called Hold and he’s going to deal with it.’

‘Maybe it was somebody driving a work van,’ Julie said. ‘Did she see his face?’

Harry wanted to maintain the lie. ‘No. He walked over but didn’t duck in. That’s why she just saw the names.’

‘Is she sure about coming to work?’ Elvis said.

‘We women are a lot more resilient than you think,’ Lillian said. ‘Alex is tough. She’ll be in tomorrow.’

‘Right, where did you get up to?’ Harry said.

Elvis was tapping at his keyboard. ‘We’re trying to get a lead on a female who was badgering Groom.’

‘You made that sound like Rogering,’ Stewart said. ‘For clarification, she was a stalker. And for all we know, his killer.’

‘This bloke Time you were questioning,’ Skellett said. ‘Did he seem genuine to you?’

‘He gave off that vibe,’ Stewart said. ‘He likes to think of himself as a big-time writer, even though he’s dyslexic.’

‘There are lots of software programs that can compensate for that,’ Elvis said. ‘As long as he’s got the ideas, it wouldn’t be a problem.’

‘I still don’t like him. He’s got a funny haircut,’ Stewart said.

Julie stood by the whiteboard. ‘We still can’t rule him out just now,’ she said. ‘He was in the hotel, or serviced apartments, whatever they’re called, and then Ewan Gallagher and Eddie Shaw came in. There are three suspects right off the bat, until we hunt down their alibis.’

‘Plus, that daft stalker woman. That makes four suspects.’

‘Groom sounds like a right arse, if you ask me,’ Stewart said. ‘I was looking him up online, and he’s been a pain in the arse to us polis for ages. Climbing on the outside of buildings, pulling all sorts of publicity stunts. He was never arrested. He’s just a public nuisance. Was.’

Skellett hobbled across to the kettle, leaning heavily on his walking stick. ‘Julie, be a pal and do some coffees, will you? I’ll fill it.’

‘No bother. Here I’ll fill it.’

‘Aye, let Julie do it so you don’t spill it and make it look like you pished yourself,’ Stewart said. Then he turned to Harry. ‘You think the missus will let you out for a pint tonight?’

All eyes were on Harry, like he was about to confess to something.

‘Let me? Behave yourself. I’ll be there.’

‘Aw, that’s shan,’ Julie said. ‘If you don’t mind me saying so.’

‘Well, Alex’s sister will be with her while I’m out.’

‘Your wife’s been in an accident and you’re going out on
